Nintendo and Another Lawsuit: Hold Onto Your Wiimotes

  • If only I could sue Nintendo for producing a product that sounds strikingly similar to my own genitalia, but alas that would not make it to court. Every company and their brother, however, is attempting to milk the Wii-shaped cow now that Nintendo has had marvelous success with their new console.

    Wiimote

Hillcrest Laboratories Inc. claims that its motion-control technology was stolen and is being used in the Nintendo Wii and Wiimotes. Hillcrest created the technology known as "Freespace." Although this lawsuit may smell fishy, just like the rest of them, there is some truth grounded in it.  Hillcrest Laboratories Inc. has been licensing its motion-control and graphic interface technology to Logitech and Universal Electronics, among others.

Hillcrest is asking for a pretty big punishment, however. They filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission asking that the Wii and Wiimotes should be blocked (yeah right) and that they receive some sort of cash settlement or the equivalent of it in newborn children. I wish the best of luck to Hillcrest Labs, since it seems that their technology was used by Nintendo, but they probably have as much hope of winning the suit as I do of reducing my body odor.
