GameRecoil -> -> MTV Games and Harmonix React to Konamis Suit
Konami, the developer of Guitar Freaks, DrumMania and Dance Dance Revolution issued a suit against the suits behind the highly acclaimed game Rock Band. MTV Games and Harmonix are going to be getting the business end of this legal action. Konami says that MTV Games/Harmonix are infringing on its patents from back in 2002/2003. These patents pertain to the music instrument simulation peripherals associated with the game as well as the rythm matching basis of the game itself. Guitar Hero, a game very similar to Rock Band, did not have any problems developing the game because they paid Konami to license the patents for the musical peripherals.
The big wigs behind Rock Band are very surprised that Konami is filing the suit, but that is not going to stop them from fighting it. They believe that because of the success of the game that there will always be baseless litigations.
It's sort of like winning the lottery. As soon as you have 20 million dollars, thirty different women claim to be your biological daughter (usually they don't file a suit, though).
