Hack Your Wii to Play DVDs

  • Want an easy "how-to" guide for playing DVDs on your Wii? Well get ready for an atom bomb of fantastic information:

***First of all, this is a homemade "I swear it works!" guide - if you screw the pooch it isn't anyone's fault but your own. With that being said, continue.***

First, make sure you download the current version of the Wii firmware (which is update 3.3).

Then, you'll have to dig a couple things out of your closet to make this work. First get an SD card. The largest SD card the Wii can read is 2gb, so don't try and shove anything bigger into your Wii (shoving big things into your Wii isn't a good idea for yourself, also).  Getting an SD card reader will help with the process as well; you will need a way to get files off of your computer and onto your SD card.

Along with the SD card, grab your well-worn copy of Twilight Princess.

Remove any Gamecube memory cards from your shiny white Wii.

You'll want to download the "Twilight Hack" and the Homebrew Channel for your Wii. Click here (http://wii.brewology.com/index.php?page=generate&packId=2) to get a zip file that contains both. (Note: Make sure to download the right version of the Twilight Hack for your region.) Load the hack files ‘n such onto your SD card. Shove card into its slot on the Wii.

Turn on your Wii with the Twilight Princess disk inserted into that puppy. Go to the Wii Saves section. Once you're in there, click on the SD Card tab in the top right-hand corner. A screen labeled "Twilight Hack" will pop up and it will prompt you to either Copy or Erase. Choose to Copy (as long as your OWN Twilight Princess saves have been erased already on your console).

    Boot up Twilight Princess.

    Menu

For the US Region game, you can read the readme file in the Wiibrew pack you downloaded and it will tell you which save file to open in the Twilight Princess. If you know that you bought your copy at the launch or shortly after, choose the first. Once you load the first save and walk backwards the hack will be activated.

So once the Twilight Hack is booted up (by walking backwards, etc) a dark screen will come up with some commands. Hit the A button and the Homebrew Channel will be installed onto your Wii. Now, head to the Wii  Menu and find the channel you just haxxored onto your Wii.

YOU'RE NOT DONE YET SLAPPYWAG! Get up and go back to your computer. Go to this link (http://hackmii.com/2008/08/libdi-and-the-dvdx-installer/) and download the "mplayer" and "libdi" links. Once you downloaded them, read the two readme files. Extract them onto your SD card within the "apps" folder. If there IS no "apps" folder on your SD's main directory, you should make one now.

The root directory, after putting those 2 files in it, should have three things in it: Apps, boot.elf, and Private. Go into Apps>Di folder... you'll need to rename one file. Rename "install.dol" to "boot.dol"... once you do that, go back to the Wii, put in the SD card, and load Homebrew.

    files

On the Homebrew channel you should see an Apps list including MPlayer and the boot.dol file you named. Click the bottom (boot.dol) file and load it. A dark screen will pop up- choose the basic install and let it run.

Once it's installed, go back to the Wii Menu>Homebrew Channel>Apps>Click on MPlayer.

    Load

Load it up and you'll get a black screen and... YOU'RE DONE!
