Guitar Hero: World Tour Has Great Compatibility

  • If a person is interested in buying both Rock Band and Guitar Hero: World Tour but is skeptical about buying two different drum sets, worry no more. At an Activision press conference at E3, Neversoft director Brian Bright made a very surprising announcement. He stated that the upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour could use non-RedOctane instruments. In fact, the drum kit control could be mapped to any instrument that had a MIDI digital output.

The most important fact about the new game is that if someone wanted to use, say, their Rock Band drum kit instead of the Guitar Hero World Tour drum kit, they could. This is an enormous advantage for people who have already paid $179 for the Rock Band package and don't want to shell out more money for a second drum set. Not only will the Rock Band instruments be supported, but the game will recognize the instruments and make necessary adjustments for them. According to Mr. Bright, "we use a five-channel input, and we've engineered the game to sense when you plug in a Rock Band drum set and switch to a four-channel input," he said. "The orange cymbal input in Guitar Hero [World Tour] automatically becomes the green fill or the blue pad on the Rock Band drum set, depending on what works best with the song. You don't even have to think about it."

At the moment this only applies to the Xbox360 version of the game and there were no confirmations for the PS3 version. Also, it is unclear whether or not Rock Band 2 will work with Guitar Hero instruments, but for the moment Bright believes that the peripherals will work with Rock Band.
