Google Lively Wants to Beat Out Second Life

  • Google wanted to get its semi-omniscient hands on the increasing Second Life crowd online- so they created Lively. According to Google Lively, it is a "chat experience in which you can communicate and express yourself using avatars in your very own space." It isn't quite an open virtual world like Second Life; instead of a Sims-like world it is more of a graphic chat room. Lively runs the customizable rooms in the browser itself, there is no seperate program for it. When a user goes between different rooms there isn't any reloading of web pages.

Lively has been in development for over two years in a constant beta mode. Players can use the game but as updates are released they become immediately activated. Content usable by the created avatars is being updated by Google staff. Currently there is a "free" price on it, but people have a sneaking Facebook-like suspicion that there will be a cost for those digital products in the future. Speaking of Facebook, Lively will available to be connected to Facebook and other social network (thus lowering productivity of the the world by 2%). It looks like eventually members of social networking sites as well as Google accounts will be able to log into Lively to extend their virtual world.

The avatar creator is what you would expect- the bastard child of Miis and Sims. Looking more realistic than Miis, it gives a good amount of customization. The room construction doesn't appear to be as fun as creating a house from scratch, but what could one expect from this 3D chat room?

Lively is supposed to be fun for all ages and flavors- with all of the other virtual communities out there it might be hard for it to make a dent. But, it IS Google, so expect to see it around.
