E3 2008 a Big Flop?

  • E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo) used to be a thriving, sweaty mess of 60,000 people or more. All of the geeks would line up to get some juicy information regarding their favorite companies and consoles. Ever since 2007, this hasn't been the case. Because of the sheer number of people and the amount of money it took to run E3, it was reorganized into a smaller, more tightly controlled event. This was widely regarded as a bad idea. Only members of the press would attend the show, dropping the huge number of people down to about 5,000. The responses to the new 2007 E3 were almost entirely bad and it seems that it is the same way for 2008 as well.

E3 has become a quiet, toned down expo when it should be open and inviting. Many executives are starting to feel that they need either their own private show or an E3 that is flashier, open, and just plain cool. The "cool factor" would also being more retailers in; most laymen don't know the inside scoop all year so some flashy attractions might be just what E3 needs to attract more people again.

One final reason that E3 was a bit of a flop was the timing; mid-July is usually a bit of downtime for video game companies. The fall is a huge sales season and because E3 was in mid-July, most game companies were unable to wait to make some huge anouncements.

Although it might not have been the best in 2008, E3 still had some interesting news. Next year hopefully it'll just be a little more rowdy.
